The Meta chief executive's stance places him squarely against a growing chorus of voices — including AI researchers, ethicists, and some policymakers — who have argued that the rapid advancement of AI poses risks that need to be carefully managed before the technology is deployed more broadly. Zuckerberg, however, is unapologetic. Under his leadership, Meta has made AI a central pillar of its long-term strategy, integrating generative AI tools across its platforms — including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — and investing heavily in developing its own large language models, most notably through the open-source LLaMA series. The island nation has been actively positioning itself as a regional technology and fintech hub, with the Economic Development Board (EDB) courting international tech investment. As AI tools become increasingly embedded in financial services, customer support, and public administration, Mauritian businesses and regulators will inevitably need to grapple with the same questions being debated in Silicon Valley: how fast is too fast, and who bears the responsibility when AI goes wrong? Zuckerberg's position effectively sets the tempo for much of the global industry. When Meta moves, others tend to follow — or are forced to compete. That reality means the conversation around AI governance is one that small, emerging digital economies like Mauritius cannot afford to ignore. As the island builds its digital infrastructure and attracts tech-sector investment, aligning with internationally recognised AI safety frameworks could become both a regulatory necessity and a competitive advantage — signalling to global partners that Mauritius is a responsible, forward-thinking destination for technology businesses.
