Souillac Mason, 48, Arrested After 21 Cannabis Plants Found at Home
ADSU officers raided a property in Souillac on 5 November and uprooted 21 cannabis plants ranging from 12 cm to 1.6 metres tall.
A 48-year-old mason from Souillac, a coastal town in the south of Mauritius, was arrested on Thursday 5 November after anti-drug officers discovered 21 cannabis plants growing at his home.
The raid was carried out early in the morning, at around 7 a.m. by officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit, known as the ADSU. This is the specialist branch of the Mauritius Police Force responsible for investigating drug trafficking and related offences.
During the search of the property, officers uprooted 21 cannabis plants at various stages of growth, ranging in height from 12 centimetres to 1.60 metres. The wide range in size suggests the plants had been cultivated over different periods, with some being relatively new seedlings and others significantly more mature.
The suspect was taken into custody following the discovery. He appeared before a court, after which he was remanded into police detention while the investigation continues. No further details about the quantity of cannabis the plants could have produced, or whether any processed drug material was found on the premises, have been released.
Souillac is located on the southern tip of Mauritius and is known for its rugged coastline and the nearby Rochester Falls waterfall. While it is primarily a tourist area, it falls within the broader Savanne district, where law enforcement agencies have periodically conducted anti-drug operations.
The cultivation of cannabis is illegal in Mauritius under the Dangerous Drugs Act 2000. Offences related to the growing of cannabis can carry significant penalties, including lengthy prison sentences, depending on the quantity involved and the circumstances of the case.
The ADSU has been increasingly active in targeting small-scale cultivation operations across the island, alongside its efforts to intercept larger drug shipments. Authorities have noted that home cultivation of cannabis remains a persistent issue in both urban and rural communities.
The investigation into this case is ongoing.
