Anti-drug officers in Mauritius arrested a 21-year-old unemployed man at his home in Grand-Gaube on the evening of Wednesday 28 October, after discovering more than 62 grams of cannabis and equipment suspected of being used to weigh and package drugs.

The operation was carried out at around 9:35 pm by officers from the ADSU, the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit, which is the Mauritian police division responsible for narcotics enforcement. They were backed by the GIPM, the Group d'Intervention de la Police Mauricienne, an elite tactical unit, and the SMF, the Special Mobile Force, a paramilitary branch of the Mauritius Police Force.

During the search of the property, officers first found a plastic bag containing 46.57 grams of cannabis. A second bag was also seized, holding 25 individual cellophane wrappings each containing cannabis, with a combined weight of 16.15 grams. The total amount recovered came to 62.72 grams.

Investigators also confiscated a digital weighing scale, which is suspected to have been used for measuring out drug quantities, a common indicator of small-scale dealing activity.

The suspect was placed in police custody following the raid. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been publicly announced at this stage.

Grand-Gaube is a coastal village in the north of Mauritius, in the Riviere du Rempart district. Drug enforcement operations have been increasing across the island in recent months, with the ADSU conducting raids in both urban and rural communities.

Under Mauritian law, possession of cannabis can carry significant penalties depending on the quantity involved and whether trafficking is suspected. The presence of pre-packaged portions and a weighing scale often leads authorities to pursue a dealing rather than simple possession charge.
