Mauritius Cop Caught with Drugs at Police Station

A serving police constable has been arrested on drug-related charges after being caught red-handed by colleagues from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) — inside the very police station where he worked. The 34-year-old officer was intercepted on the evening of Monday, 14 September, as he was preparing to leave the premises in his personal vehicle. ADSU investigators had reportedly been monitoring suspicious behaviour during his shifts before deciding to move in. A search of the constable at the scene yielded two sachets of cannabis with an estimated street value of Rs 10,000, seven used sachets still containing drug residue, a digital weighing scale, and Rs 19,000 in cash — a combination that strongly suggests small-scale retail dealing rather than personal use. A follow-up search was conducted at his home in Chemin-Grenier, a coastal village in the south of Mauritius, but investigators found no additional incriminating evidence there. The constable is currently being held at the Vacoas Detention Centre and appeared before the Souillac District Court on Wednesday. The case raises uncomfortable questions about internal vetting and the capacity of police leadership to detect misconduct within their own ranks. The ADSU is typically deployed to pursue civilian drug networks — the fact that one of its operations has now targeted a uniformed colleague underscores the breadth of Mauritius's drug challenge, which cuts across social and professional boundaries. This arrest also adds to a string of cases in recent years where Mauritian law enforcement personnel have faced drug-related charges, putting pressure on the Commissioner of Police to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms.
