A routine noise complaint on the coastal road of Flic-en-Flac nearly turned violent on the evening of Sunday 18 October, when a young man brandished a machete at police officers responding to the scene.

At around 9:50 pm, a patrol unit was called to the coastal road in front of a hotel in Flic-en-Flac, a popular beachside town on the west coast of Mauritius, following reports of excessively loud music coming from a parked vehicle.

When officers arrived and approached a 23-year-old man from the Barkly area of Rose-Hill, he began hurling abuse at them. The situation escalated sharply when the suspect reached for a machete, known locally as a sabre, and pointed it directly at the officers while making violent threats.

Police managed to restrain and arrest the man without further incident. He was taken into custody immediately.

During the operation, officers also discovered the vehicle responsible for the noise complaint. The car had been left running with music at full volume and was found to be fitted with false registration plates, raising further legal concerns beyond the original disturbance call.

The vehicle was handed over to the Police Vehicle Transit Unit, known as the PVTU, the specialised unit responsible for impounding and transporting seized or suspect vehicles. It was towed to the Flic-en-Flac police station, where it will be held as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect faces potential charges that could include threatening behaviour, possession of a weapon in a public place, and offences related to the false number plates on the vehicle.

Flic-en-Flac is one of Mauritius's most visited beach destinations, drawing both tourists and local residents, particularly on weekend evenings. Noise disturbances in the area have been an ongoing concern for residents near the seafront.
