Anti-drug officers in Mauritius arrested a 31-year-old fisherman on Monday 26 October after a search of his home in Pointe-aux-Piments, a coastal village on the north-west coast of the island, uncovered cannabis and drug-related equipment.

Officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU), the specialist branch of the Mauritius Police Force responsible for narcotics investigations, carried out the search of the suspect's residence. Inside, they found a plastic bag containing ten smaller sachets, each holding a quantity of cannabis. The total weight of the seized substance came to 12.47 grams.

In addition to the cannabis, investigators also confiscated an electronic weighing scale and Rs 950 in cash. The presence of pre-packaged sachets and a precision scale is typically treated by police as an indicator of drug distribution activity rather than personal use.

The suspect was arrested on the spot and placed in police custody. The ADSU has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

Pointe-aux-Piments, located along the north-west coast between Trou aux Biches and Balaclava, is a predominantly residential and fishing community. Drug enforcement operations in coastal villages have become more frequent in recent years as authorities attempt to disrupt supply networks that occasionally use fishing routes.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Act of Mauritius, possession of cannabis can attract significant penalties depending on the quantity involved and whether intent to supply is established. Cases involving packaged portions and weighing equipment often lead prosecutors to argue that the accused was involved in dealing rather than simple possession, which can carry heavier sentences.

The suspect remains in detention as officers continue their inquiries. No charges had been formally filed at the time of reporting.
