Anti-drug police in Mauritius arrested two people on Friday 23 October after discovering nearly 800 grams of cannabis during a raid on a residential property in Trou-d'Eau-Douce, a coastal village on the east coast of the island.

Officers from the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit, known as the ADSU, carried out the search at around 3:15 in the afternoon at the home of a 38-year-old man. A 30-year-old unemployed woman was also present in the property at the time of the raid.

During the search, officers found and seized a bag containing 792 grams of cannabis, along with three mobile phones, which are commonly seized in drug investigations as they can contain evidence of communications related to drug distribution.

Both individuals were placed under arrest. Investigators then conducted a second search at the woman's own residence in Palmar, a nearby coastal locality also on the east coast of Mauritius. No drugs or other incriminating items were found at that address.

The two suspects were taken into police custody. The ADSU investigation is ongoing.

The ADSU is a specialist unit within the Mauritius Police Force dedicated to combating drug trafficking and smuggling across the island. East coast communities such as Trou-d'Eau-Douce and Palmar have periodically featured in ADSU operations in recent years.

What this means: Possession or trafficking of cannabis in Mauritius carries serious criminal penalties under the Dangerous Drugs Act. A seizure of 792 grams is well above the threshold typically associated with personal use, meaning the suspects are likely to face charges linked to trafficking rather than simple possession. Both individuals remain in custody while police continue to build their case.
