Three young men were rescued from the sea off Butte-ร -L'Herbe on Sunday 25 October 2026 after strong ocean currents left them unable to return to shore, the National Coast Guard has confirmed.

The incident unfolded at around 3:25 pm when the kayak carrying the three men was caught in powerful currents and began drifting. Unable to paddle back to the coast under their own steam, the men were left stranded at sea and an emergency alert was raised.

Crew from the National Coast Guard (NCG) station at Grand-Baie, a coastal town on the northern tip of Mauritius, responded quickly to the distress call and located the stricken kayak. All three men were brought safely aboard and transported back to the NCG base at Grand-Baie. No injuries were reported.

The three rescued men, aged 26, 23 and 21, all reside in Cap-Malheureux, a village on the northern coast of Mauritius close to Butte-ร -L'Herbe.

Butte-ร -L'Herbe is a coastal area in northern Mauritius known for its scenic waters, but the surrounding sea can be subject to unpredictable currents, particularly as seasonal wind and swell patterns shift. The area attracts swimmers, snorkellers and paddlers, though open-water conditions can change rapidly.

The National Coast Guard is a branch of the Mauritius Police Force responsible for maritime safety, search and rescue operations, and the protection of Mauritian waters. Its northern station at Grand-Baie covers a stretch of coastline that is among the most visited and recreationally active on the island.

This rescue serves as a reminder to anyone taking to the water around Mauritius, whether in a kayak, on a paddleboard or swimming, to check conditions before setting out and to remain within designated safe zones. Kayakers in particular are advised to stay close to the shore, travel in groups and carry a means of raising an alert if conditions deteriorate.

Authorities have not indicated whether any formal action is being taken following the incident.
