Teen Gunman Kills Four at Oregon Primary School Before Being Shot Dead

A teenage gunman killed four people, including three young children, at a primary school in the city of Bend, Oregon, on Thursday 15 October 2026, in one of the deadliest school shootings in the United States in recent years.

The attack took place at Silver Rail Elementary School, a school of more than 400 pupils, shortly after 1pm local time. The 16-year-old attacker entered the school premises armed with a rifle and opened fire, killing a five-year-old, an eight-year-old, an eleven-year-old and a teacher. Two further victims, a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police officers from the Bend Police Department arrived at the scene within two minutes of the first emergency call being made. However, by the time they entered the building, the shooting had already been stopped. The gunman was dead.

According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the attacker was shot and killed not by law enforcement but by an armed civilian bystander. That individual had spotted the teenager entering the school with a weapon, followed him inside, and opened fire to stop the attack.

The identity of the 16-year-old, who is said to have been a resident of Bend, a city of roughly 100,000 people located in central Oregon, has not been released publicly. Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive.

The shooting has reignited intense debate across the United States about gun violence, school safety, and the role of armed civilians in emergency situations. Oregon has seen tightened gun control measures in recent years, but mass shootings at American schools remain a persistent and deeply painful crisis for the country.
