Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit officers raided a residential address in Quatre-Bornes on Wednesday 4 November, uncovering a significant haul of synthetic drugs, cash and gold jewellery. The ADSU is Mauritius's specialist police unit tasked with combating drug trafficking and smuggling across the island.

When police arrived at the property, they found a 33-year-old unemployed man and his 31-year-old partner, also unemployed. On seeing the officers, the man fled the scene immediately. His partner remained at the address and was subsequently arrested after the search turned up controlled substances.

The quantities seized were considerable. Officers recovered a bag containing 100.45 grams of pure synthetic cannabinoids and a separate plastic bag holding 200.54 grams of the same substance. They also found 269 aluminium foil wraps containing a combined 40.45 grams of synthetic cannabinoids, along with a sachet of 15.23 grams of cannabis. In total, more than 340 grams of synthetic cannabinoids were found on the premises.

Synthetic cannabinoids, sometimes called synthetic marijuana or spice, are laboratory-made chemical compounds designed to mimic the effects of cannabis. They are significantly more potent and unpredictable than natural cannabis and have been linked to serious health emergencies across Mauritius in recent years.

In addition to the drugs, police seized a plastic bag containing Rs 25,000 in cash, as well as a collection of gold jewellery. The items included four bracelets, four chains, 13 rings, earrings and five pendants. The presence of both drugs and high-value jewellery is likely to form part of the ongoing investigation into suspected trafficking activity.

The woman has been placed in police custody. The male suspect remains at large and is being actively sought by the police. The investigation is continuing.

Quatre-Bornes is a densely populated urban town in the Plaines Wilhems district of central Mauritius, located between Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill and Vacoas-Phoenix. It is one of the island's main commercial hubs.
