Mauritians can enjoy a bright and largely sunny Monday, but conditions are set to shift as the evening approaches, according to the latest meteorological update.
A moderate southeast wind is currently sweeping across the region, carrying with it a line of atmospheric instability that is expected to influence local weather from tonight onwards. While the morning and daytime hours will remain predominantly fine and clear, cloudy spells will gradually build through the evening and into the night, bringing showers primarily to the eastern half of the island and the central highlands.
Winds will blow from the southeast at around 20 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h at times — a reminder that even on a seemingly calm day, conditions can shift quickly in the Indian Ocean.
Temperature-wise, coastal regions will enjoy warm maximums of between 28°C and 30°C, while highland areas such as Curepipe and the central plateau will be cooler, peaking between 24°C and 26°C. Overnight minimums will dip to between 18°C and 20°C on the central plateau and between 22°C and 25°C along the coast — a sign that the island's winter season continues to make its presence felt.
Authorities are urging caution at sea. Swells of around 3 metres from the southwest are expected beyond the reef line, making conditions hazardous for open-water navigation. Outings in the western and southern lagoons are also discouraged, a measure that will impact water sports operators, fishing communities, and leisure boaters who typically rely on calmer Monday conditions to resume activities after the weekend.
This forecast serves as a timely reminder of Mauritius's transitional weather patterns during the cooler months, where mornings can deceive with glorious sunshine before conditions deteriorate rapidly after sunset. Residents and tourists planning outdoor or seaside activities are advised to make the most of the daylight hours and remain indoors or on higher ground as evening draws in.
