Motorcyclist Killed in Poudre-d'Or Collision with Van

A motorcyclist lost his life and a second person was injured after a motorcycle collided with a van in Poudre-d'Or, a coastal village in the north of Mauritius, on Monday 19 May.

Emergency services and the SAMU, the Mauritian equivalent of a medical emergency response unit, were alerted and dispatched to the scene. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the point of impact, having succumbed to his injuries in the collision.

The passenger, who was also involved in the crash, sustained injuries and was transported to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital (SSRN) in Pamplemousses, the main public hospital serving the north of the island.

The exact circumstances that led to the collision have not yet been established. An investigation has been opened by the relevant authorities to determine how the accident occurred.

Road safety remains a serious concern in Mauritius. The island's roads, particularly in rural and coastal areas, see a high volume of motorcycle traffic, and collisions involving motorcycles and larger vehicles account for a significant proportion of road fatalities each year.

No further details about the identities of those involved have been released at this stage.
