A 62-year-old motorcyclist has died after a collision involving two motorbikes on the Royal Road in Grand-Gaube, a coastal village in the north of Mauritius, near the Telecom installation in the area.

The accident took place on Friday 30 October. According to initial information, the man's motorbike collided with a second motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old, who was also carrying a 19-year-old passenger. Both the rider and his passenger are residents of Poudre-d'Or, a locality close to Grand-Gaube along the northern coast.

The two younger men were taken to hospital for treatment following the crash. The 62-year-old victim, who had sustained serious injuries in the impact, later died from his wounds.

Police subjected the 20-year-old rider of the second motorcycle to a breathalyser test, which returned a negative result. Despite this, he was placed in police custody as investigators work to establish exactly how the accident occurred. A formal police inquiry is now under way.

Road accidents remain a serious public safety concern in Mauritius. The country's road network, particularly along busy coastal routes in the north such as the Royal Road linking Grand-Gaube, Poudre-d'Or and Cap Malheureux, sees significant two-wheeler traffic. Motorcyclists and cyclists are statistically among the most vulnerable road users on the island.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased. No further charges have been announced at this stage, and the investigation is ongoing.
