A targeted drug operation in Vallée-des-Prêtres, a residential area in the north of Port Louis, led to the arrest of a 31-year-old mechanic on Saturday, October 17.

The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU), a specialist branch of the Mauritius Police Force responsible for narcotics investigations, acted on precise intelligence about suspicious activity in the area. Officers intercepted the suspect, a resident of nearby Vallée-Pitot, while he was riding his motorbike.

With his consent, police carried out a body search on the spot. The search uncovered several items hidden on the man. Officers found a cigarette box containing a piece of aluminium foil with traces of what is believed to be a controlled substance, a handmade aluminium pipe suspected of having been used to smoke heroin, and a small bottle filled with a pink liquid presumed to be methadone.

Methadone is a prescription medication used in Mauritius as part of an officially sanctioned Opioid Substitution Therapy programme, which aims to help people dependent on heroin reduce their drug use under medical supervision. Possessing methadone without a valid prescription or outside the programme is illegal.

The man was taken to the local police station for questioning and administrative procedures. All seized items and substances were sealed and sent for laboratory analysis to confirm their exact nature. After his interview with investigators, the suspect was released and allowed to return home while the investigation continues.

No charges have been formally announced at this stage, as results of the forensic analysis are still pending.

What this means: Drug-related arrests in residential areas like Vallée-des-Prêtres reflect the ADSU's continued focus on street-level enforcement across Port Louis neighbourhoods. The presence of suspected methadone outside a clinical setting raises questions about diversion from official health programmes, a concern that Mauritian authorities have been monitoring alongside their broader anti-drug strategy.
