Mauritius has welcomed more than 1.1 million tourists in the first nine and a half months of 2026, continuing a steady upward trend in the island's vital tourism sector.

According to the latest figures released by Statistics Mauritius, the national statistics office, a total of 1,113,391 tourists arrived between 1 January and 15 October 2026. That is a 3.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 1,074,355 arrivals were recorded.

The vast majority of visitors arrived by air. Air arrivals stood at 1,088,437, while 24,954 tourists arrived by sea, likely via cruise ships calling at Port Louis Harbour.

Europe remains by far the largest source of visitors for Mauritius, accounting for 684,199 arrivals since the start of the year, up 2.3 percent on the previous year. France continues to lead all markets with 243,038 tourists, though growth from that country was modest at 1.0 percent.

Germany was a notable bright spot, crossing the 100,000-visitor milestone with 101,733 arrivals, a strong rise of 12.2 percent. The United Kingdom, however, bucked the positive trend, recording 107,915 arrivals, a decline of 9.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The UK had historically been one of the top three European markets for Mauritius, making this dip worth watching.

Beyond Europe, South Africa delivered 88,057 arrivals, up 8.5 percent, reinforcing its position as the dominant African market for the island. India posted the strongest growth rate among major markets, with 67,324 arrivals representing a 12.9 percent increase, reflecting sustained interest from the Indian subcontinent as airlines and tour operators expand routes and packages.

What this means: Tourism is the backbone of the Mauritian economy, contributing roughly 20 percent of GDP and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in hospitality, transport and retail. A 3.6 percent growth rate through mid-October suggests the sector is on track for another record year, building on the post-pandemic recovery that began in late 2022. The surge from Germany and India points to successful diversification away from traditional markets, which is a strategic priority for the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. The decline from the UK, a key high-spending market, may prompt closer attention from tourism authorities in the months ahead, particularly as airline connectivity and exchange rate pressures continue to shape travel decisions.
