Mauritius is stepping up efforts to make its tourism sector greener and more economically resilient, with a new training initiative targeting smaller accommodation providers across the island.

On Wednesday 4 November, the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa, located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, hosted the official opening of a working workshop focused on sustainable practices for tourism operators. The event was organised by the Tourism Authority, the government body that regulates and promotes tourism-related businesses in Mauritius, in partnership with the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), an international organisation of French-speaking nations that supports development across its member states.

The workshop was designed to do more than raise awareness. Participants, drawn from guesthouses, tourist residences and small hotels, received practical tools and concrete knowledge to help them adopt more responsible and efficient management models. The sessions covered the three main pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.

Niven Muneesamy, Director of the Tourism Authority, spoke at the opening and highlighted the vital role that smaller accommodation providers play in the broader tourism ecosystem. He noted that guesthouses and small hotels are key to diversifying the visitor experience, showcasing authentic local hospitality and supporting the economic wellbeing of surrounding communities. Kervyn Rayeroux, General Manager of Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa, was also among those present.

What this means: Mauritius earns a significant share of its national income from tourism, but the sector has historically been dominated by large luxury resorts. Smaller operators, including guesthouses and boutique properties, often lack the resources or know-how to implement green standards or improve their business practices on their own. By pairing up with the OIF, the Tourism Authority is accessing international expertise and potentially funding to help level the playing field. For visitors and investors, this signals a broader push to align Mauritian tourism with global sustainability expectations, which are increasingly shaping traveller choices and international accreditation standards.

The initiative comes at a time when the global travel industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, and as Mauritius works to position itself as a destination of choice not just for luxury travellers but for eco-conscious visitors as well.

Further sessions under the programme are expected to continue, though no specific dates have yet been announced.
