Mauritius Riots: Rs 22 Million Lost as Shops Burned and Looted
Pizza Inn, SaveMax and McDonald's are among businesses hit hard by riot damage across Mauritius, with total losses running into tens of millions of rupees.
The wave of civil unrest that swept across Mauritius has left a trail of destruction through the island's retail and food sectors, with businesses reporting combined losses estimated at well over Rs 22 million. Fires, looting and vandalism have forced several outlets to close indefinitely while owners and managers assess the full scale of the damage.
The supermarket chain SaveMax has been among the hardest hit. Its branch in Bambous, a town in the Black River district in the west of the island, was completely burned down and looted during the disturbances. A second SaveMax outlet in Camp-Levieux, a locality in the Plaines Wilhems district, was also targeted. Management has placed initial losses for the two sites at between Rs 15 million and Rs 16 million. The Bambous store remains closed until further notice, though other SaveMax locations are continuing to operate and supply customers, subject to how the situation develops.
In Beau-Bassin, a densely populated town in the greater Port Louis area, two well-known restaurant chains suffered significant damage. Pizza Inn had equipment stolen during the unrest, including motorcycles, mobile phones and cash register hardware, in addition to damage to the restaurant itself. Losses at that site are estimated at close to Rs 1 million.
McDonald's in Beau-Bassin was also targeted, with vandalism and theft reportedly causing around Rs 5 million in losses, according to information gathered by ION News.
Beyond fixed retail premises, the unrest also disrupted supply chains. A delivery truck belonging to Oxenham, a Mauritian distribution company, was caught up in the trouble. The vehicle was carrying approximately sixty crates of goods valued at Rs 200,000.
What this means: These losses go beyond the immediate financial hit to individual businesses. Outlets that remain closed reduce the availability of everyday goods for local residents, particularly in areas like Bambous where SaveMax was a key supermarket option. For workers employed at these businesses, prolonged closures raise concerns about job security and wages. Insurers, landlords and suppliers connected to these businesses also face knock-on effects. The broader economic signal is significant too: destruction of commercial infrastructure can slow recovery in affected communities and adds pressure on business owners who may struggle to rebuild without government or insurance support.
