Mauritius has inaugurated a new stroke care unit at Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis, marking a significant step in the government's push to bring specialist medical services closer to patients across the island.

The unit, known formally as a neuro-vascular or stroke unit, was officially opened on Wednesday 28 October in a ceremony attended by Health Minister Anil Bachoo, Labour Minister Reza Uteem, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed, Junior Health Minister Anishta Babooram, and members of parliament Farhad Aumeer and Ehsan Juman.

Before this unit opened, stroke patients in Port Louis and the surrounding area had to be rushed to Victoria Hospital in Candos, in the centre of the island, which was the only public facility with a dedicated stroke service. Minister Bachoo acknowledged that those transfers caused critical delays in treatment. In strokes, every minute without care can mean greater brain damage or disability, which is why rapid, on-site specialist intervention is considered essential.

The minister confirmed that the plan is to equip all five of Mauritius's regional public hospitals with a neuro-vascular unit, a geriatric ward and a specialist diabetes centre. The five regional hospitals are Dr A. G. Jeetoo in Port Louis, Victoria in Candos, Jawaharlal Nehru in Rose-Belle, Flacq Hospital in the east, and Souillac Hospital in the south.

Bachoo said the project flows directly from healthcare investment measures announced in the 2025 national budget, which set out a programme to upgrade both general and specialist infrastructure across the public hospital network. He noted that approximately 95 percent of the targets set under that programme have already been met.

Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital, named after a prominent Mauritian physician and political figure, serves one of the most densely populated catchment areas on the island, covering Port Louis and communities to the north. The addition of a stroke unit there is particularly significant given the volume of patients the hospital handles daily.

What this means: Stroke is a medical emergency in which blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. Speed of treatment directly determines how much brain function a patient can recover. Having a dedicated unit at Jeetoo means patients in the capital no longer lose precious time in transit to Candos. For families in Port Louis, this could be the difference between full recovery and lasting disability. The wider rollout to all regional hospitals, once complete, would mean that no matter where in Mauritius a stroke occurs, specialist care would be within reach.
