Mauritius is gearing up to celebrate International Children's Rights Day 2026 with a dedicated programme of activities organised by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, working alongside the National Children's Council.

The Cabinet, which met on Friday 6 November, took note of the planned events. This year's celebrations are built around the Creole theme "Mo Zour. Mo bann drwa. Mo Lavenir." which translates roughly as "My Day. My Rights. My Future."

The centrepiece event will take place on Thursday 19 November at the Centre de Créativité in Mahébourg, a coastal town in the south-east of Mauritius. Around 120 children drawn from Children's Clubs across the country, as well as from the Mahébourg region itself, are expected to attend.

The day will be filled with artistic discovery sessions and interactive workshops designed to give young Mauritians a space to express themselves, participate in activities and think about their futures. The focus on creativity reflects the government's stated commitment to ensuring every child on the island can exercise their right to self-expression.

Alongside the cultural programme, a drug awareness campaign tailored specifically for a young audience will be rolled out at the event. The campaign sits within the government's broader ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse and other social issues affecting Mauritian communities.

The National Children's Council, the statutory body responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of children in Mauritius, is a key partner in organising the celebrations. Children's Clubs affiliated with the council operate across the island and serve as grassroots platforms for youth participation.

International Children's Rights Day, also known as Universal Children's Day, is marked globally on 20 November each year, commemorating the date the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Mauritius, as a signatory to that convention, recognises the occasion annually.

What this means: For families and communities across Mauritius, the event in Mahébourg is a rare opportunity for children from different parts of the island to come together in a structured, supportive setting. The addition of an anti-drug awareness component signals that the government is using youth-focused events not just for celebration but also for prevention, targeting young audiences before risky behaviours take hold.
