A coalition of trade unions and civil society groups is calling on Mauritians to take to the streets this Saturday, 31 October, to demand action on the rising cost of living, old-age pensions and water shortages.

The Platform Komun Syndikal, known by its acronym PKS, announced the march at a press conference held on Tuesday 27 October. The rally will begin at 1 p.m. outside the Marie-Reine-de-la-Paix centre in Port Louis and proceed to the Jardin de la Compagnie, a public garden in the heart of the capital.

PKS brings together several prominent union figures, including Atma Shanto, Reeaz Chuttoo, Jane Ragoo, Haniff Peerun and Ashvin Gudday. The platform says it wants to draw the attention of the authorities to the daily pressures faced by ordinary Mauritians.

Among the concerns the platform has highlighted are the sharp rise in the cost of food, problems with electricity supply, water access, and the adequacy of the old-age basic pension. Pesticide use in agriculture has also been raised as a public health concern.

Jane Ragoo, Secretary-General of the Confederation of Workers of the Public and Private Sectors (CTSP in French, Confederation des Travailleurs des Secteurs Public et Prive), was among the speakers at the press conference. Speaking in Mauritian Creole, she said: "There are challenges, there are water problems, electricity problems, food problems, pesticides." She added that Mauritius, a country of just 1.3 million people, was small enough that its people could collectively ensure a decent quality of life for all, provided they joined forces.

The march is being organised as a peaceful, civic demonstration. PKS has not announced any direct political affiliation with opposition parties.

What this means: For residents and workers in Mauritius, this march reflects a broader frustration with the pace of government response to inflation and public services. The call to protest comes ahead of any formal budget consultations and signals that unions intend to keep purchasing power, pension levels and infrastructure quality high on the public agenda. Anyone planning to be in central Port Louis on Saturday afternoon should expect some disruption along the route between Marie-Reine-de-la-Paix and the Jardin de la Compagnie.
