Police in Terre-Rouge have arrested a 33-year-old mason in connection with a series of thefts at the Bois-Marchand cemetery, located in the north of Mauritius near the town of Terre-Rouge.

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Terre-Rouge, a specialist plainclothes unit of the Mauritius Police Force, made the arrest on Thursday 5 November as part of an ongoing investigation into the incidents, which are believed to have taken place in October.

According to investigators, the suspect targeted equipment belonging to the cemetery's infrastructure. Items allegedly stolen include electrical cables, a battery, an aluminium door and a water pump. Among the targeted installations was the site's incinerator and its associated equipment.

All of the stolen property belongs to the Pamplemousses District Council, the local government body responsible for administering public facilities, including cemeteries, in the Pamplemousses district in northern Mauritius.

When questioned by investigators, the man reportedly confessed to the thefts. The investigation remains open, and further developments are expected as the case progresses through the justice system.

Thefts from public cemeteries and municipal facilities, while not common, represent a particular concern for local authorities in Mauritius, as the stolen equipment is often essential to the day-to-day running of public services. The Pamplemousses District Council oversees a number of such sites across the region, and the loss of infrastructure components like water pumps and electrical cabling can disrupt operations significantly.

No court date has been announced at this stage, and the investigation is continuing.
