Man Beaten to Death by Six Masked Attackers in Vacoas

A violent robbery has turned fatal in the quiet residential area of La Caverne, in the central Mauritius town of Vacoas, after a 34-year-old man was beaten to death by a group of six masked attackers.

Selven Iyempermal died on 28 October from injuries sustained the previous evening at his home. According to investigators, he was inside with a friend when the two men heard suspicious noises coming from the yard and went outside to investigate.

They were confronted by six hooded individuals armed with sabres, telescopic batons and a baseball bat. The attackers demanded money and then set upon Iyempermal with extreme violence. His friend, who tried to step in and help, was also beaten and sustained multiple injuries.

Emergency services attended the scene and Iyempermal was taken for treatment, but he did not survive. A post-mortem examination concluded that the cause of death was haemorrhagic shock resulting from multiple traumatic injuries, meaning the severity of the blows caused catastrophic internal blood loss.

The Vacoas Police Station has opened a murder inquiry. No arrests had been publicly announced at the time of reporting.

Vacoas-Phoenix is one of the most populous municipalities in Mauritius, located in the central plateau region of the island. La Caverne is a residential locality within that district.

The level of organisation and armament involved in the attack, with six individuals wearing masks and carrying multiple weapons, raises serious questions about whether this was a targeted assault rather than an opportunistic robbery. Investigators are working to establish the motive and identify those responsible.

The death adds to growing public concern in Mauritius about violent crime, particularly incidents involving groups armed with bladed weapons or clubs. Authorities have not yet released further details on potential suspects or the direction of the investigation.
