French Orthopaedic Surgeon Completes 15 Major Ops at Jeetoo Hospital
Dr Bruno Zipoli's second mission to Mauritius saw 80 consultations, 15 major surgeries and 10 shoulder infiltrations at Port Louis's Jeetoo Hospital.
Access to specialist orthopaedic care in Mauritius took another step forward this week as French surgeon Dr Bruno Zipoli completed his second medical mission at the Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis, one of the island's main public hospitals.
Health and Wellness Minister Anil Bachoo met Dr Zipoli on Wednesday 4 June at the hospital to review the outcomes of the visit, which began the previous week. Dr Zipoli is an orthopaedic surgeon and traumatologist based in France, and his trips to Mauritius are part of a broader effort by health authorities to bring specialist expertise to public patients who might otherwise struggle to access complex surgical care locally.
During this second mission, Dr Zipoli consulted 80 patients suffering from complex orthopaedic conditions, performed 15 major surgeries, carried out 10 shoulder infiltrations, and conducted several specialised arthroscopic examinations. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat problems inside a joint, most commonly the knee or shoulder.
Minister Bachoo also highlighted the results of Dr Zipoli's first mission, which took place between 22 February and 2 March 2026. During that visit, the specialist performed 12 operations and conducted numerous outpatient consultations.
The initiative is designed to serve two purposes. First, it gives Mauritian public patients direct access to a level of orthopaedic expertise that is not always readily available through the national health system. Second, it creates an opportunity for local medical staff at Jeetoo Hospital to work alongside and learn from an experienced international specialist, strengthening in-house capacity over time.
Jeetoo Hospital, located in the capital Port Louis, is one of the largest public hospitals in Mauritius and serves a significant portion of the island's population. Orthopaedic and trauma services are in consistent demand, particularly as Mauritius faces an ageing population and a rising burden of musculoskeletal conditions.
What this means: For patients on public health waiting lists with complex bone or joint conditions, visiting specialist missions like this one offer a meaningful alternative to costly private care or medical travel abroad. The government's approach of partnering with overseas specialists for periodic missions is a cost-effective way to address gaps in highly specialised surgical fields without the long-term expense of recruiting permanent staff. If the programme continues, patients and local doctors alike stand to benefit from both the immediate surgical output and the knowledge transfer it generates.
