A 36-year-old former police constable has died after spending more than a week in intensive care following an incident in the Flacq district on the east coast of Mauritius.

On the morning of Saturday 31 October, at around 10:30 a.m. the man was found unconscious in a sugarcane field along a private road belonging to Alteo Ltd, a major sugar and energy company, in the area of Bonne-Mere, Flacq. His motorcycle was found nearby. Emergency services transported him to hospital, where he was placed in the intensive care unit. He died on Friday 6 November without regaining consciousness.

During a search of the man, officers discovered methamphetamine, a pair of scissors, three empty plastic bags believed to have been used to package drugs, and Rs 7,400 in cash. Police consider the cash to be suspected proceeds from drug sales.

Because the man was unconscious when found, a breathalyser test could not be carried out.

The deceased had previously served as a constable with the Mauritius Police Force before leaving the service. He was a resident of Brisee-Verdiere, a village in the Flacq district.

Police have opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the man came to be found collapsed in the field and what led to his condition.

Methamphetamine, locally referred to as "meth" or "crystal," has become an increasing concern for Mauritian authorities in recent years. It is classified as a dangerous drug under the Dangerous Drugs Act 2000, and possession can carry heavy penalties. The drug is typically imported into the island and has been linked to a growing number of criminal cases.

The case raises questions about the well-being of former law enforcement officers and the broader challenge of drug use in rural communities. Because the man died before charges could be formally brought, the investigation is now focused on determining the full picture of events and whether other individuals may be involved in any drug supply network.

Police have not ruled out further arrests as enquiries continue.
