Elderly Motorcyclist, 77, Critical After Truck Collision in Plaine-Verte

A 77-year-old man is fighting for his life in intensive care after a serious road accident in Plaine-Verte, a densely populated neighbourhood in central Port Louis, on Thursday 18 September. The elderly man was riding his moped along Rue La Paix when he was struck by a heavy goods truck that emerged from Rue Dauphine. According to initial reports, the truck driver pulled out suddenly, giving the septuagenarian no time to react or brake. The victim sustained serious injuries in the collision and was swiftly transported to Jeetoo Hospital — the main public hospital serving Port Louis, located in the city centre — where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. The truck driver, reported to be an Indian national, remained at the scene. Mauritian authorities have launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the accident, including whether traffic rules were observed at the junction. Plaine-Verte is one of Port Louis's busiest urban districts, and its network of narrow streets — including Rue La Paix and Rue Dauphine — sees heavy mixed traffic throughout the day, combining motorcycles, pedestrians, and large commercial vehicles.
