A road accident in Camp-de-Masque, a town in the east of Mauritius, has left a 72-year-old woman in intensive care after the vehicle she was travelling in veered off the road on Friday 23 October.
The car was being driven by a 55-year-old photographer from Lallmatie, a locality in the eastern part of the island. He lost control of the vehicle, which ended up in a roadside ditch.
The passenger, a woman aged 72 from Saint-Julien-d'Hotman, a village in the east of Mauritius, sustained injuries serious enough to require emergency hospitalisation. She was transported to the SAJ Hospital by the SAMU, the island's emergency medical services unit, equivalent to a paramedic ambulance service. Upon arrival, she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
The driver was subjected to a breathalyser test at the scene. The result came back negative, meaning alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
No further details about the cause of the loss of control have been made public at this stage. Investigations are ongoing.
