Three masked men armed with a machete, a baseball bat, and a long stick broke into a restaurant in Baie-du-Cap, a coastal village in the south of Mauritius, in the early hours of Wednesday 14 October, making off with goods and cash estimated to be worth Rs 300,000.

The owner of the restaurant, a 44-year-old local resident, was alerted remotely at around 12:45 a.m. via his establishment's remote surveillance system. He watched in real time as the three hooded individuals cut through the padlock on the front door and entered the premises.

Within minutes, the group seized a large quantity of alcohol bottles and Rs 12,000 in cash from the till before fleeing the scene. The total loss, including the stolen alcohol stock, has been estimated at Rs 300,000.

Police from the Bel-Ombre station, which covers the southern coastal area including Baie-du-Cap, responded to the incident and have since arrested two of the three suspects. The investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify and locate the third individual.

Baie-du-Cap lies at the southwestern tip of Mauritius, near the Le Morne peninsula, and is a predominantly residential and small-business community. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Bel-Ombre police post.

The case highlights the growing role of remote CCTV and surveillance technology in helping business owners respond quickly to break-ins, even when off-site. In this instance, the live feed allowed the owner to alert authorities in near real time, which may have contributed to the swift arrest of two suspects.

What this means: Armed robberies targeting small businesses remain a concern in Mauritius. Business owners are increasingly relying on remote monitoring systems to protect their premises outside operating hours. While two arrests have been made, police have not yet confirmed whether charges have been formally filed, and the search for the third suspect continues.
