A young woman in Plaine-Magnien, a village in the south-east of Mauritius, lived through a terrifying ordeal on the evening of Friday, 2 October, when a large armed gang descended on her family's home while she was alone inside.
At around 9:15 p.m., she heard shouting from the main road outside. A group of men were calling out her father's first name. When she looked outside, she was confronted by a mob of six to seven highly agitated individuals, armed with iron bars and pieces of wood.
**The attack**
The group repeatedly struck the main gate until it was destroyed, then forced their way onto the veranda. They then turned on the front door, smashing its glass panels, before using iron bars to destroy a glass-and-aluminium display cabinet that her father used to showcase cakes for sale β indicating the family may run a small home-based bakery business.
Fearing for her safety, the young woman quickly barricaded herself in a secure room inside the house and waited for the attack to end.
No injuries to the woman were reported, but the material damage caused during the rampage is estimated at Rs 250,000 β a significant sum for what appears to be a modest family business and home.
**Investigation under way**
The Plaine-Magnien police station has opened an investigation to identify and locate those responsible for the attack. It remains unclear what motivated the assault, though the fact that the attackers were calling for the woman's father by name suggests the incident may be linked to a personal dispute.
Plaine-Magnien is a locality in the Grand Port district, close to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport. Like many semi-rural areas of Mauritius, it is generally considered a quiet community, making this level of organised violence particularly alarming for local residents.
No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
