Anti-drug officers uprooted 20 cannabis plants from an abandoned plot of land in La Flora on Wednesday 4 November, following a targeted sweep of the area.

The operation was carried out by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit, known as the ADSU, which is Mauritius's specialist law enforcement unit dedicated to tackling narcotics trafficking and cultivation. Officers conducted a combing exercise across the derelict site and uncovered what appeared to be a deliberate growing operation.

The plants ranged in height from 15 centimetres to 50 centimetres, suggesting they had been cultivated at different stages of growth. All 20 were uprooted and seized by officers on the spot.

La Flora is a locality in the Flacq district in the east of Mauritius, an area that has seen periodic ADSU activity related to drug cultivation in rural and semi-rural plots.

As of the time of reporting, no arrests had been made and the identity of the person or persons responsible for the cannabis plot remained unknown. An investigation is ongoing.

Cannabis cultivation is illegal in Mauritius under the Dangerous Drugs Act. Convictions for drug-related offences can carry significant prison sentences depending on the quantity involved and whether a trafficking charge is established. Cultivation at any scale can attract serious criminal liability.

The ADSU regularly conducts search operations across the island targeting both small-scale backyard grows and larger commercial operations. Finds on abandoned or overgrown land are not uncommon, as cultivators often use isolated plots to avoid detection by residents and police.

What this means: For residents and landowners in rural areas, this case is a reminder that abandoned or unmonitored land can be exploited for illegal cultivation without the owner's knowledge. Landowners are encouraged to report any suspicious activity on or near their property to the ADSU or local police.
